Tena koutou katoa… Welcome to

Kamo Primary School

We are a learning community providing quality education for children predominately living in the Kamo area of Whangarei. We cater for children from New Entrants to Year 6. The total Kamo Primary School roll is usually in the vicinity of 390 to 475.

Our school vision is ‘Learning for the Future’ and we feel this illustrates the journey of lifelong learning which is at the heart of the New Zealand Curriculum.

Parents and Whanau of Rimu Students
3 May 2024

To our Parents/Whānau of students in Team Rimu,

If your child is in Room 7, 8, 9,10, 11 or 12 changes will occur for their classrooms very soon.

Christie MacPherson in Room 10 will be leaving at the end of Week 5 of this term to prepare for her first born child. As mentioned in my newsletters/panui last term, unfortunately we have been unable to replace her, which means we cannot get a new teacher for our Room 10 students. Lack of teachers in Aotearoa is now at crisis stage. We have no option but to spread the students in Room 10 across the rest of the classes in Team Rimu for the remainder of the year. Fortunately, our class sizes in that team are slightly lower than usual this year. However, they will reach late 20’s and early 30’s as we spread the students from Room 10 into Rooms 7, 8, 9,11 and 12. This is not what we want, but I assure you we will make it work and the reality is, we have to work with our situation. Starting this afternoon, we will be having some transition afternoons to check that we are making suitable placements for our students. So, if your child comes home sharing about afternoons in other rooms, this is the back story to it.

We will send a note home to the parents/whānau of our Room 10 students by the end of Week 3 to let you know your child's new class placement. We cannot take any requests. These changes have been very deeply thought out. I have been able to secure a teacher who will support 3 days a week from Week 6 to support learning in classes. Plus, Matua Bill will help two days a week until another teacher can support learning in Term 3. The Senior Leadership team comprising of Brenda Lewis, Ben Soole and myself, Sally Wilson will support where needed. Again, I acknowledge this is not an ideal situation, but we are striving to provide the best possible solution. We will keep you posted of any changes.
